Mile 2256.7 to 2278.6 for 21.97 miles with an elevation increase of 4810 and decrease of 3248; plus approximately 1200 feet of elevation to go up Old Snowy Peak. Camp was at Elk Pass/Coyote junction at an elevation of 6687. Our morning was chilly, but skies were clear. It must be Elk mating season as we were serenaded by elk calls starting at 4 am. Had great views of Mt. Adams, Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier. Saw lots of mushrooms early in the day. The trail was excellent! We were on high ridges with lots of meadows and wild flowers. We had planned to hike another five miles to get to a water source on the PCT alternate (due to a fire closure that started at Elk Pass), but it was getting late and the weather was getting worse. We determined that we had enough water to get through the night and even have hot dinners. Today was the most spectacular of our trip to date. Goat Rocks Wilderness has never failed to impress me with its beauty. The ridge walk from Old Snowy to our camp was incredible, although quite windy. Lots of local hikers today, but not many PCT hikers. All in all a glorious day. Just as the last daylight was leaving Squeeze, Jam and Milkshake appeared and camped by us. We had light rain during the night and very high winds. We could see the actual flames from the forest fires from our camp and the summit of Old Snowy.
