Mile 1966.5 to 1982.6 for 16.1 miles plus 1/2 mile off the PCT getting into Lava Lake Campground (elevation of 5334). We rolled over and slept in a bit longer when the 5:30 alarm sounded. Hiking at 7:00 and into camp at 2:45. It was so luxurious to have a picnic table to sit at, an outhouse to use and a short day of hiking. Most days when we get to camp it’s boom, boom, boom getting camp set up, filtering water, cooking dinner and planning the next day. We had a smokey night and morning. The smoke increased through the day but not so bad as to burn our eyes. North Sister looked eerie silhouetted in the smoke. The trail today was through lots of lava fields and a big burn which we aren’t out of yet. When we weren’t hiking on lava rock the trail was loose sand or ash from the fire. Loose sand is tiring to walk through. Given the terrain the trail was great. We had a nice chat with “Nightcrawler” at a water break. We had not seen him since southern Kennedy Meadows.
