Mile 1717.17 to 1741.2 for 23.6 miles plus 1 mile uphill road walk getting to the trailhead. Elevation gain of approximately 3398 and loss of 3816. Left Callahan’s at 9:15 and into camp at 7:30. Jerry strolled in at 8:10. We camped by the Little Hyatt Reservoir at an elevation of 4630 feet. Skies were very smokey in the morning and cleared slightly later in the day exposing the hot sun. Our trail was dirt; a pleasant change from the loose sand and boulders of California. We hiked through numerous very dry meadows and light timber. The slightest spark could ignite the entire area. Our first water source was a small trickle around 11 miles. Our next water was at camp. Sometimes the trail dictates how far you hike. Today was one of those days. Jerry struggled mightily in the heat today. Under headlamps we ate the rest of our days snacks for dinner then crashed. It was still quite warm at 9pm. During the day we saw two dead mice and lots of lizards. Also enjoyed many very sweet thimble berries. Such a treat! Heard from Baloo and Nat Geo who are in Sisters, Oregon after skipping north to get away from some of the smoke coming from the many forest fires.
