Day 129 - 8/5/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
August 8, 2018
Mile 767.0 to 760.5 for 6.5 PCT miles plus 16.2 non-PCT miles to ascend Mt Whitney. Our hardest “Nero” to date. Total PCT miles 1,700.74. The PCT elevation up was only 885 ft and down of 1,703 ft. The non-PCT was up 4,132 ft and 4,435 ft descent. Total miles for the day was 22.7. Note the elevation of Mt Whitney is 14,505 ft. We were hiking at 5:45am and into camp at 6:30pm. Camp was at Rock Creek st an elevation of 9,536 ft.
It was a cold morning as we hiked up the west sides shadowed trail. We both wore our hat, gloves and down puffies all the way to the summit in four hours (~10am). We caught many folks who left Crabtree Meadows very early with headlamps. It was really nice having only day packs and having been acclimated by many consecutive days over 10,000 ft. We were back in camp at 2:15pm where we took a long break. The PCT trail to the camp was very poor. We met a couple from Fairbanks going the John Muir Trail and were visited by a large marmot at a bivy site high on Whitney during a break. It was surprising to see the hoards of people coming up the “Portal Trail” to the summit. It was another cloudless day without any bugs. We are excited to have full dinners tonight.
