Mile 777.9 to 767.0 for 10.9 PCT miles plus 1 mile on the Whitney trail to camp. Elevation of camp was 10,652 ft. Elevation gained was 1,347 ft and lost was 2,846 ft. Total PCT miles are 1,692.4. We slept in since this was planned as a short day prior to tomorrows Mt Whitney ascent. We had a chilly night and awoke to frost on our tent. We packed the tent wet and dried it out at camp. The trail began in a big open basin and transitioned to light timber as we descended below 11,000 ft. We had a true ford at Wallace Creek which was ~3” above my knees. On a few sections of trail Jerry gave the designers an “F”. I often hear him grading the trail designers, particularly when it’s poor. We were in the trail at 7:30am and into camp at 1:30pm. This was a real luxury for us! We took advantage of the time to begin planning for Oregon! We also look forward to discarding the onerous bear bins required by the National Parks. We have seen no evidence of bears for 200 miles we have been carrying the bins, including bear scat. Perhaps the NPs are requiring the bears to either carry “blue bags” or dig “cat holes” to reduce their environmental impact! (LOL). Tonight we shared a freeze dried dinner in our continuing effort to stretch our limit food.
