Day 126- 8/2/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
August 8, 2018
Mile 811.83 to 793.50 for 18.33 miles with an elevation increase of 4435 and decrease of 4062. Camp is at an elevation of 10,629 by Middle Rae Lake. We were hiking at 6am and into camp at 4:45. The creek fords were non issues as we found logs to walk or boulders to hop. We packed our tent wet and dried it out midday. The trail passed by several lakes and streams and was mostly in open terrain with very little shade. We went over Pinchot Pass at an elevation of 12,107 feet then dropped to an elevation of 8559 feet where we crossed a suspension bridge over the S. Fork of Kings River. We then began a long ascent headed toward Glen Pass. Thunder clouds began building by 10am and we were nervous about what it would mean for us since we are behind schedule given our food supply. This seems to bother me more than Jerry. Fortunately the thunder clouds dissipated today. We have noticed that around these high passes between about 10,000-10,700 feet in elevation the terrain is absolutely stunning. A funny thing that happened today while I was peeing. When I turned around there were two marmots standing up on their hind legs watching me from about 20 feet away. There is just no privacy on this trail! We shared one of our freeze dried meals tonight. We are both very hungry and it has been that way for a few days now.
