Day 125- 8/1/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
August 8, 2018
Mile 823.58 to 811.83 for 11.75 miles with an elevation increase of 3374 and decrease of 1989. Total PCT miles 1649.41. We were hiking at 6:20 and into camp at 1:30. Thunder clouds were forming by 9:00. At 1:00 it started raining lightly and by 2:00 it was raining hard and the thunder was spectacular. Therefore we set up camp and hoped we could hike again later today. By 5:00 it was still raining so we stayed put. Our tent fly was sopping wet and it made no sense to pack it up wet and hope we could dry it out before we retired for the evening. I am so frustrated at this point, but we start making contingency plans if we are unable to make decent miles in the next few days. We shared a salami stick for dinner as we had little water and no stream nearby. Tomorrow we potentially have 3 rivers to ford within 2 miles of where we are camping. We did get over Mather Pass today which is at an elevation of 12,096 feet. It is hard to hike with full packs containing 5 days of food at these elevations. When the trail is rocky and the steps are big it’s that much harder. We plan to be moving at 6 am. It is not light before that time.
