Day 122 - 7/29/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
August 8, 2018
Mile 873.89 to 855.88 for 18.01 miles with an elevation increase of 2422 and decrease of 3819 plus 3 miles non PCT to retrieve our resupply at Muir Trail Ranch. Total PCT miles 1605.36. Camp is next to the S. fork of the San Joaquin River at an elevation of 8077; just inside Kings Canyon National Park. We were hiking at 6:45 and into camp at 5:30. This included an hour at the Muir Trail Ranch (MTR) dividing up our resupply packages. Prior to MTR we went over Selden Pass and forded two rivers. Neither river was over my knees. The trail was good at times and not so good at other times. It had a lot of granite slabs as well as boulders and rocky terrain to negotiate. As we got closer to MTR it felt like re-entering the desert. Around Selden Pass there were many beautiful lakes. MTR was a big disappointment. Their website advertises short stay accommodations for hikers which includes a bed, laundry, showers and meals. We discovered they have none of these and they didn’t even allow hikers to use the sani cans! We had planned on a minimum of dinner and breakfast, this makes us short on food for this long, challenging stretch. We paid $80 per 25 lb bucket to “pack” in to MTR. We saw a pickup truck delivering packages while we were there.
