Day 121 - 7/28/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
August 8, 2018
Mile 891.65 to 873.89 for 17.76 miles with an elevation increase of 4130 and decrease of 4957. Total PCT miles 1587.35. Camp is at an elevation of 9390 on a ridge just past a small creek. Hiking at 6:30 and into camp at 4:50. A beautiful camp with great views so we decided to not descend further and enjoy the location. Today was an up and down day. Initially a big descent from Lake Virginia to Fish Creek then a climb back up to Silver Pass, then back down to the junction to VVR (Vermilion Valley Resort), then back up to Bear Ridge and finally down to our campsite. We walked by several gorgeous alpine lakes and had our permits checked at Squaw Lake by rangers out doing some trail work. At one small lake just south of Solver Pass it was brimming with thousands of tadpoles. Much of the day we walked by huge granite walls that were stunning even with the smokey skies. When we were taking a break by the VVR junction a helicopter flew low and announced something that no one could understand due to the roar of the river. We learned from the rangers that the smaller marmots are yellow bellied marmots and the large trees with red bark are Junipers. It has been nice getting into camp earlier the past couple of days and we have enjoyed the plentiful water sources. Unfortunately, biting flies have been more plentiful than we would like. Thank goodness they were not present at our wonderful campsite.
