Day 118 - 7/25/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).

Mile 919.88 to 906.63 for 13.25 miles with an elevation gain of 1122 and a loss of 3077 plus a .3 mile uphill on a side trail to Reds Meadow Resort. Total PCT miles 1554.61. Our morning was cool with clear skies, although it had been smokey during the night and got smokey again by mid morning.Jerry had an interesting encounter with a ptarmigan that when videos are posted is fun to watch. We hiked on high shoulders and then entered Devils Postpile Monument which was in an old burn. It was hot, dusty and nearly shadeless with rare breezes. The heat really wore on us. At Reds Meadow we got cold drinks and caught the shuttle to Mammoth Mountain, then a bus into Mammoth Lakes. It was quite efficient. We met “ICB” who had also flipped to Ashland and is hiking SOBO. However, she is flipping back to Bishop and will hike north back to Mammoth. Got to our motel and checked in. The lock on the door didn’t work because all the hardware that should be in the wall is missing. Also, no air conditioning. When Jerry booked the room he was asked if he needed air conditioning and he replied “yes”. When I asked about the lack of air conditioning I was told it broke this morning and we did not need air conditioning because it would cool off at night. Since I have been sleeping at elevations of 9,000 feet and above with vestibules wide open and hardly using my sleeping bag I knew “it will cool off at night” was a joke. I asked for a fan which he got. I did our laundry and we had a nice dinner.
