Day 114 - 7/21/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
July 26, 2018
Mile 978.19 to 959.87 for 18.32 miles with an elevation gain of 5395 and loss of 4227. Total PCT miles 1501.37. Camped at Miller lake, elevation 9467. Hiking at 6:45 after oversleeping the alarm. Into camp at 6:15pm. We woke to smokey skies. The trail was good with lots of granite steps and paved walkways. We had plenty of water sources and more uphill than we desired. We saw some small marmots and now believe that they may be a species of marmot that is new to us. This being said what we thought was a baby marmot awhile ago might be one of this smaller type. If I see a Ranger will ask about these. Shockingly after crossing Benson Pass there was a dead deer next to the trail. Its stomach was on the trail. It had not been harvested and was recently killed. We were mystified by what killed this deer. We hiked by many granite walls at least 1,000 feet tall. Unfortunately, smokey skies did not lend itself to good photos. Also went by many lovely lakes and streams. We got to camp just as it started raining hard and got the tent up in the nick of time. Miller lake had sandy shores and would have been a great place to swim had we arrived earlier. Goal: Tuolumne Meadows by 4pm tomorrow.
