Day 110 - 7/17/18 (flip from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
July 18, 2018
Mile 1030.75 to 1016.93 (Sonora Pass) for 13.82 miles. Elevation increase of 3691 and decrease of 2629. Total PCT miles 1444.23. Hiking at 6:30 and at Sonora Pass (Hwy 108) at 2:30. Surprisingly we woke to clear skies and a cool morning that did not last as temps soared quickly and by afternoon winds shifted and we had smokey skies. This was a mentally difficult day for us. Hiking south away from our objective, plays tricks on our minds. Feels like we are on a never ending detour. Many times each day we find ourselves dreaming of being back in Ashland and hiking north. The trail today was good, but only had intermittent shade and breeze as we gained in elevation. A ptarmigan sat on a rock about 25 feet away and just stared at us as we walked by. A deer did this same thing yesterday. Felt fortunate to get a hitch to northern Kennedy Meadows within 20” of reaching Sonora Pass. Picked up our bear bins, got cold drinks and were ecstatic that they had dorm rooms, laundry and showers for hikers. Cleanest hiker facilities we have had on the trail. When they asked how many nights we wanted to stay and I said one, Jerry jumped in and said “I want to “zero” here so two nights”. Truth be told so did I but we had not really discussed what we wanted. Got showers, did laundry, and shared a bottle of wine on the deck. Afterwards we visited their 150 horses, had dinner and went to bed. We also met Jen who is hiking NOBO and is from Shelton, WA. Such a small world sometimes. She and Jerry discussed their incredible weight losses. The staff here are friendly and helpful, just what we needed today. We hear that fire has closed part of Yosemite, but none of the trail.
