Day 107 - 7/14/18 (Flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA)
July 18, 2018
Mile 1090.76 to 1073.21 for 17.55 miles. Note: Trail Angel dropped us at Echo Lake summit trailhead on Hwy 50 which was about 0.79 miles south of where we left trail, so we actually hiked only 16.76 miles. Elevation increase 3533 ft and decrease 2455 ft. Total PCT miles 1387.95.
Started hiking at 8:45am after Susanne the Trail Angel picked us up at our motel and a quick stop at Safeway. We were into camp at 6pm by a small creek. Camp elevation 8309 ft.
The day started with a stiff 2000 ft climb and the trail was vastly improved from the trail on the north side of Hwy 50. We hiked through some of the most stunningly beautiful meadows we’ve seen on the trail. We encountered the “Death Ride’s” finish at Carson Pass which was a zoo. Jerry snagged a cold Pepsi from a cooler near the finish area! A further quarter mile at the visitor center and Ranger Station we were treated with pop, cookies and fruit. This year is the 50th Anniversary of both the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) and the Appalachian Trail (AT). We had a few sprinkles appropriately around Shower’s Lake. Thunder was booming all afternoon and it began raining around 5:50pm. We increased our pace and found a tent site by 6pm. The rain lasted only for an hour that evening. For several hours after setting up our red tent we were buzzed by multiple hummingbirds!
