Day 105 - 7/12/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
July 13, 2018
Mile 1112.59 to 1090.76 for 21.83 miles with an elevation increase of 3256 and decrease of 3645. Total PCT miles 1370.40. Hiking at 6:30 and to Hwy 50 by 6:00. The morning was warmer than usual and I did not start hiking with liner gloves and a wind shirt like usual. Mosquitoes were particularly annoying early on. Recently biting flies have been the primary annoyance. We hiked by several stagnant ponds as well as beautiful lakes. Lakes Velma, Fontanilli, Dicks, Susie and Aloha were just a few of the lakes. The hike up Dicks Pass (9400 ft) was stiff and we were glad that it came early in the day. We reacquainted with Jose who we had not seen since day 1. He is doing so great especially considering he had never backpacked before he started the PCT. The quality of the trail today was the worst we have been on ever. It gets this distinction because of the # of miles it was so bad. Jerry believes they hired engineers who flunked out and said design a trail. The heat on open slopes really got to Jerry and finally I convinced him we should go swimming in Aloha Lake. After a rest in the shade and harassment from me he relented. The water temp of the lake was perfect and our hour spent cooling off was wonderful. We also were joined for quite some time by an endangered species toad who took a liking to my shirt which I had laid on a rock. He seemed to like the shade of my sleeves and would hop under the shirt and periodically poke his head out. Alternatively he would get right next to my shoe and just sit there in the meager shade that the shoe provided. Another great thing today was seeing a baby marmot. Could not have been more than 6” long. Neither of us have ever seen one that small. We are still suffering from hiker hunger. I ate 2 days worth of snacks today as did Jerry. When we got to Hwy 50 we got a hitch within 5 minutes to a Raley’s gas station in S. Lake Tahoe. Sitting outside on the curb we had a frustrating 1.5 hours trying to find a motel to stay the night. Finally got a room at the Days Inn and got a ride. We were told there is a celebrity golf tournament this weekend so things are booked up and prices are double. We are in a very minimal room and paid $156 a night. The check in was kitty corner across an 8 lane road where the receptionist had attitude. The room key did not work so Jerry went back across the street and in fact she had written down the wrong room #. It is now almost 9pm and have not eaten and it’s our wedding anniversary. Very disappointing end to our day. We walked to a close by pizza/brewery and got something to eat.
*note when videos get posted I reference Jacks Pass. It is really Dicks Pass.
