Mile 1135.88 to 1112.59 for 23.28 miles. We gained 3417 ft in elevation descended 3212 ft. Total PCT miles 1348.57. Camped at Phipps Creek (elevation 7630). Overslept our alarm so did not get hiking until 6:45. Got into camp at 6:45 after filtering 8 liters of water and carrying it the last .7 miles to a tent site. Some NOBO hikers told us that the water at Phipps Creek was stagnant which is why we did the carry. However, we found it flowing just fine. Our day started with a stiff climb that opened up into a beautiful ridge walk by the Alpine Meadows ski area. Lovely views of Lake Tahoe and surrounding peaks. Meadows galore with wildflowers in full bloom. About 6 miles into our day we met trail angel “Coppertone” who had a spread of cinnamon rolls, bananas, strawberries, cookies and root beer. Jerry had a cinnamon roll and I had a banana. We have both been challenged with hiker hunger the past few days so this was a great treat. From Barker Pass on we were in big trees without the gorgeous views. There were lots of local hikers out and may have outnumbered the through hikers going NOBO. One of our great pleasures today was seeing marmots playing up by the ski resort. We have only seen marmots one other time on this trip. At dusk a couple of hikers informed us that a bear was within a hundred yards of our tent and was only 2-3 feet off the trail when they went by. It did not have fear of humans. They did their best to scare it off. Thankfully we had no issues with bears in camp. We both felt strong today, although my left knee is still giving me grief.
