Day 103 - 7/10/18 ( flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
July 13, 2018
Mile 1153.38 to 1135.88 for 17.50 miles with an elevation increase of 3789 and decrease of 3467. Total PCT miles 1325.29. We are excited to have now hiked 1/2 of the 2650 mile trail. After breakfast, taking care of some business related to home we got an Uber ride back to the trailhead. We also are very appreciative of Fawn and Pat who pulled some gymnastics to get our resupplies to the Sierras in time. Without cell or WiFi for the previous two weeks time was of the essence. One location required packages be sent 3 weeks in advance as they bring them in by pack train. We were hiking at 9:15 and into camp st 5:45. Camp is at an elevation of 7435 next to Five Lakes Creek. We discovered that the hose from Jerry’s Platypus water bladder fit on a Smart water bottle. This gave him a way to drink water while hiking and worked well. Today we were mostly on ridges with moderate wind, beautiful meadows with stunning flowers and views. We ran into Milkshake, Loner and Lady Meow, Meow and reacquainted with Sage who we last saw in Bishop. She is just back on trail going NOBO after a 10 day break to rest an injured ankle. We met “Ops” and “Forward” who are from Shoreline,WA and finishing up the part of the trail they could not finish last year. We are hearing of several fires. One apparently has closed 15 miles of the trail somewhere by the CA/OR border. Another one is burning around Independence, CA. When we were in Old Station, CA the locals mentioned 5 fires in the area. None were impacting the trail however. Today we saw smoke east of us, but not too close. We hiked by a few ski areas such as Donner Pass and Squaw Valley. When we got to camp we were buzzed several times by low flying, loud helicopters. This surprised us as we are in the Granite Chief wilderness. We are feeling strong.
