Day 99 - 7/6/18 (flip SOBO from Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA).
July 9, 2018
Mile 1219.7 to 1195.4 for 21.77 miles. Total PCT miles 1266.75. Elevation increase of 2863 and decrease of 4854. We opted to not do the PCT reroute new this year and hiked the old trail which saved us 2.5 miles. We saw no reason to drop to a horse camp then hike back up again. Hiked to Hwy 49 then walked approximately .5 miles on Hwy before getting a hitch into Sierra City. There were no rooms for rent and only place left in town to sleep was in a dirt side lot next to the local church. We were stunned at the number of hikers in town; at least 100. Our hike this day began with cool temps that quickly got cold and then we had a few hours of light rain. Afterwards temps soared and it was quite hot by the time we reached Sierra City. We reacquainted with Keana, Baloo and Nat Geo and ran into Irish Tony who we had not seen since Mike’s Place. We were told the store that had our resupply box closed at 5 pm and we were 2 miles from the Hwy at 4:05. Jerry started his turbo hiking and with the hitch we made it in time to get our box. Again no cell service and WiFi very limited and weak. The trail was very rocky for several miles at the end of the day which was hard on us. We had dinner at a local restaurant where Jerry had too much wine. He stumbled back to our tent and collapsed half in and half out making a great “deadman” in lieu of tent stakes. This was quite entertaining to all the other hikers camping close to us. We were glad to have taken a “zero” at Bucks Lake as there was no way to get one in Sierra City. I am taking lots of Advil for my left knee and feet.
