Mile 1613.7 to 1599.7 for 14 miles. Elevation increase of 2437 and decrease of 2655. Total PCT miles 864.94. Staying in Etna, CA tonight. We woke to a very wet tent fly which took until 8:30 to dry out from the rain we had during the night. When we left camp it was very cold so we had on parkas and gloves. The trail was through miles of burned forest. Must have recently burned as it smelled like a campfire you just doused with water. We arrived at the Etna summit by 2:30 and were surprised to see a fire truck and police officers. They were investigating a truck that had driven over an embankment and needed to be excavated. The firemen gave us cold water and Gatorade which we quickly drank. A woman who drove by with no room in her car to give us s ride to Etna gave us a lot of freshly picked strawberries. All of this was quite a treat. Since we were having no luck hitch hiking one of the policemen gave us a ride in his cop car into town. A first for both of us. A funny thing happened today. As I was walking through the burned forest a blue jay flying overhead pooped and it landed on my pants. Had to stop and use some of my water to rinse it off my thigh. We noticed a lack of wildlife today and only saw one through hiker who had skipped the Sierras and has been hiking north from Sierra City. Saw several local hikers and backpackers as we got close to Etna summit.
