Day 72 - 6/9/18 - unplanned zero (flip SOBO Ashland, OR to LonePine, CA)

June 12, 2018

It rained hard all night until about 7:30am when sunshine teased us and began to dry the tent. We were optimistic that we would be hiking by noon. However at 11:30 it began hailing! It hailed, rained and snowed until 8pm. I struggled with fact that we are unlikely to complete the goal of finishing PCT this year. The recent time suck of Kennedy Meadows, Bishop and Ashland along with our continued sub 20 mile daily pace is killing this goal. Today is our sixth unplanned zero! We can’t pack a wet tent, hike in the rain, hail and snow while gaining elevation and expect to be dry tonight! Frustrated. Being very goal oriented I feel I have failed if I do not achieve goals that I set. Jerry encourages me to enjoy the journey instead of focusing on the goal which I do most of the time, but downtime provides ample time for the mind to wander into negative territory. On another note we are wondering how hikers with hammocks or Tyvek tarps are doing in this weather. Thank goodness I carried the extra snacks and breakfast for two from Seiad Valley as we will need them on this leg to Etna CA. The weather forecast was way off predicting only 20% chance of intermittent precipitation.
