Day 69 - 6/6/17 (flip to Ashland, OR to Lone Pine, CA)
June 12, 2018
Mile 1670.7 to 1655.9 for 14.8 miles. Elevation increase 1943 and decrease 5299. Total PCT miles 808.67. Camp at Siead Valley RV Park elevation 1373.
We woke to a cool morning without tent condensation. Hiking by 7am in a few more miles of the burn area. Ran into a trail crew who had cleared a few miles from our camp and were headed to Seiad Valley. After the cleared portion the trail had extensive brush and downed logs with one steep section in particular that provided a route finding challenge. Temperatures soared as we descended into Seiad Valley reaching 90 degrees when we hit the valley bottom. The 3/4 mile road walk to the cafe was very hot. Reached the cafe 45 minutes before it’s 2pm closing time craving cold things. Jerry had five Pepsi’s and a large milk shake, but was unable to
finish his burger and fries! Kathy had ice tea, ice water, a milk shake and cottage cheese. Picked up our resupply at the post office and walked next door to the RV Park. Showers, laundry, napping consumed the remainder of the day. Spoke with Dawn and changed the Castella box to Dunsmuir so we can get a motel rather than a campground for our zero day. We saw more Indian paintbrush flowers on the trail than we’ve ever seen before. Jerry claimed this red “center of attention” flower as his favorite for its wow factor. Also there were so many butterflies on the trail it was hard to avoid walking on them.
