A “zero” day. Rinsed our tent in the shower to remove a lot of dirt from previous days on the trail. Set it up on the bed in our motel room to dry. Got replacement reading glasses and some new foam for lumbar padding on my new pack. Chose a gardeners kneeling pad to cut up this time. Drove 80 miles round trip to Independence to get our packages including new pack. The waist belt is substantially better. Afterwards we sorted through our supplies and were able to ship resupply boxes to Seiad Valley and Etna because we had so much extra food due to our change of plans. Also sent a large box back home with bear bins, ice axes, microspikes and heavy clothing among other things. Jerry spoke with some hikers who came in today and described lots of post hiking and crusty snow that had many “mystery” steps. These are when with each step you may stay on top of the snow or break through and sink. This type of hiking is exhausting. We leave for Ashland in the am after my chiropractor appointment. It felt very strange driving a car after 2 months of only walking or hitching rides. Glad to be getting back on the trail late Saturday or Sunday.
