Mile 713.79 to 728.16 for 14.41 miles. Elevation increase of 3139 and decrease of 2055. We camped at 9000 feet. We started hiking at 7:15 and reached camp by 3:30. Sandals left a couple of hours before us with a plan to meet us at camp. The morning was very cold and did not warm up until the bridge over the S. Fork of the Kern river where we got water and enjoyed the swallows flittering under the bridge. My shoulders were carrying most of my pack weight and my lower back was feeling bruised as the lumbar pads we added in Tehachapi were fully compressed. About halfway through the day Jerry offloaded my bear bin. About 1:30 it started to snow then hail. As we descended it turned to light rain. We were pleased to be at camp and get the tent up before it really let loose. For about 2 hours we had steady rain, thunder and lightning. At about 10,000 feet we saw our first marmots of the trip. They are more orange in color than the hoary marmots in the N. Cascades.
