It was a short, warm night. We were out hiking by 6:45am under some shade and slightly cooler temperatures than yesterday. Filtered water approximately 1/3 mile off the trail at mile 545.1. It was excellent water and because we were there in the morning were able to sit in the shade shelter of a large cliff close to the spring. Afterwards we had a stiff uphill section with high winds and beating sun. The wind broke the shaft of Jerry’s umbrella as well as his spirit. We filtered 11.5 liters of water at the spring to carry for a dry camp and drank another 4 liters while sitting there. I was also struggling at the spring. Mental fatigue was setting in due to the slow pace due to Jerry’s knee, constantly heavy packs with all the water we needed to carry, the constant filth wind and heat all culminated for me. However I also recognized what good things were happening. The wind cut the swealtering heat and the beauty and strength of the many tiny and seemingly delicate flowers in our midst. Then we were blessed with a water cache at mile 549. Jerry was able to find some shade and we drank cooler water. Today we hiked mile 540.33 to mile 555.74 and we. met Shorts from San Diego. Because he is local, he’s spent many nights in friends homes. This evening we camped on a knoll in the wind farm at elevation of 4915 ft.
