Day 37 - 5/5/18

Mile 485.61 to mile 501.1. Gained 5351 feet of elevation and descended 2780 feet. We camped at an elevation of 5200. It was a warm night. We got water twice during the day and drank heavily at both locations as we were dehydrated from the previous day. It was pleasant hiking under large trees for a large part of the day. Jerry’s knee did well until the last couple of hours. Flies harassed us most of the day, by getting in our face, under sunglasses and in our ears. Flying insects have increased over the past couple of days. We did not encounter many hikers today, but did meet Stargazer who is from France. We recalled that a year ago today Cedar and Alex  began their through hike. We met them last September in Stehekin where they graciously answered all our questions and gave us great information. It was nice to surpass mile 500! We saw one snake today and I surprised a blackbear close to camp. It ran up the trail away from me, thank goodness.
